Kerala truckers drop strike plan

Our Bureau

Welfare Fund Board to meet soon

Thiruvananthapuram , April 10

The planned strike by truck and contract carriage owners in Kerala from Sunday midnight had been called off following discussions their representatives had with the Labour Commissioner.

The owners had threatened to go on strike in protest against the directive on payment of dues to the Motor Workers' Welfare Fund along with the road tax.

According to the compromise worked out at the talks, which was held in the presence of the Labour Commissioner, Mr A.J. Rajan, the Welfare Fund Board would meet immediately to discuss the points raised by the owners.

However, since the model code of conduct for elections is in force, the matter would be announced only after the elections. Therefore, status quo would be maintained on the issue of payments for one month, Mr Rajan said.

It may be recalled that the Labour Department had issued a directive that taxes would be collected from the vehicle owners from April 1 this year only if they paid double the amount as their contribution to the Welfare Fund.

Under the orders from the department, those owners failing to remit the taxes would have found it difficult to operate their vehicles after the period. The quantum of contribution had been a contentious issue for some time now.

The Government, at a meeting held in August last year, had agreed to reduce the rate of the owners' contribution to the fund from Rs 350 to Rs 200 per employee.

It was also decided at the meeting, which was attended by the Labour Minister, Mr Babu Divakaran, that the contribution would not have to be paid in advance.

The unions of the truck operators were of the stand that the latest order from the Labour Department was in contravention of the agreement reached at the meeting with the Minister.
