Tighter norms likely for vehicle imports

K.R. Srivats

New Delhi , April 10

The Government is mulling whether a "little more of disciplining" could be done on the vehicle registration front to ensure that there is no misuse of the export promotion capital goods (EPCG) scheme for import of vehicles by the hospitality and tourism industry.

"I am contemplating whether little more of disciplining is possible on the type of registration.

"At the time of registration, we could stipulate or ensure that vehicles imported under such schemes are not to be used for private use.

"Even the Delhi High Court is in favour of such an approach," Mr K.T. Chacko, Director-General of Foreign Trade (DGFT), told Business Line here.

The DGFT said that this might require discussions with other departments such as tourism and road transport.

Vehicles imported under a concessional duty under EPCG scheme to promote tourism had found their way in the recent past to select politicians and film stars for their personal use.

A number of such vehicles were impounded and the owners were made to pay up the full duty on imported cars.
