Air Cargo Govt may allow AI, IA various options for cargo airline Our Bureau
New Delhi , April 10 The Government is open to the two state-owned airlines Air India and Indian Airlines examining various options for setting up separate cargo airlines including tying up with the private sector, the Secretary, Civil Aviation, Mr Ajay Prasad, said. "The airlines can look at leasing aircraft, forming joint venture companies or running the cargo airline as a separate unit," said Mr Prasad on the sidelines of the `India cargo summit' that had been organised by the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII). Indian Airlines plans to convert its fleet of Boeing 737-200 aircraft that are currently being operated by the 100 per cent subsidiary, Alliance Air into freighter aircraft. Similarly, AI is to convert the Airbus A-310 into freighter aircraft. Earlier, addressing the summit, the Secretary pointed out that if the 7-8 per cent growth in the economy has to be maintained then the aviation sector will have to play an "important contributory role". The Secretary also outlined the various steps the Government had undertaken to check the infrastructure bottlenecks being faced at airports around the country. "The Government is working on developing not only the airports in the metro cities but is also keen to develop airports in at least 35 non-metro cities. In Coimbatore, work is on to upgrade the cargo terminal while the computerisation work at the terminal has started," said Mr Prasad.
