IIM fee hike

The proposal to increase the fees at IIMs by a massive Rs 25,000 is ill-advised. India has several economic strata, with a significant percentage having to grapple to get the next full meal.

The field of education too has different strata — the ordinary degree colleges, the professional institutions and, above all, the IITs and the IIMs.

Increasing IIMs fees could trigger a similar move by other institutions, restricting the chances of the really eligible ones. The gulf between the `haves' and the `have-nots' should not be widened further.
