Spices Board to train farm resource persons

G. K. Nair

Kochi , April 11

The Spices Board has formulated a training programme for resource persons who will function as an alternative extension mechanism fully conversant with good agricultural practices and rooted in the rural communities.

The board sources said it had decided to extend a training programme similar to the one undertaken earlier.

Three training programmes will be held this year in Kerala (March-May 2006), Tamil Nadu, Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh (August - October 2006) and the north-eastern States (November 2006-January 2007).

The training programmes on good agricultural practices for quality spice production were conducted successfully earlier for 80 youths who would serve as agricultural resource persons for unemployed youth from Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh and the north-eastern States.

FOCUS ON EXPORTS

The training will focus on good agricultural practices for spices including vanilla, cardamom, chilli, pepper, ginger, turmeric herbal spices, seed spices and tree spices, which are export oriented crops from India.

The objective of the training is mainly to train a large number of resource personnel from the rural communities that are targeted for development by the board. The trainees are expected to provide an interface between the board and the spice producers by providing necessary advisory services to the spice growers in the areas.
