AP Govt offer to resolve port row

Fishermen given three options

Visakhapatnam , April 11

The Andhra Pradesh Government has come up with a conditional offer to resolve the Gangavaram port row.

Speaking to newspersons on Monday night, the Minister for Commercial Taxes, Mr K. Ramakrishna, said that the Government would accept the demand for construction of a fish-landing centre 600 m north of Nallamarammapatalu.

He added that a road would be laid to the jetty if the offer gets accepted.

However, under this package, neither would there be job opportunities to affected persons nor any incentive under rehabilitation and resettlement (RR) policy as spelt out in a Government order earlier.

Mr Ramakrishna held talks with the senior officials in Hyderabad before announcing three options for fishermen to end the row over construction of a private port at a cost of Rs 2,000 crore by Dubai Port International and the DVS Raju consortium.

He also said that if the fishermen agreed to accept fishing jetty proposed at Yarada, they would be extended incentives under RR policy and provided 300 direct and indirect jobs in the port.

In addition to the proposed hilltop road to go to Yarada from Gangavaram village, the Government would also lay an approach road to the shore.

On the demand from a section of fishermen for relocation of their village near any jetty, he said that the Government is ready to consider the demand by extending benefits under RR policy without providing any job opportunity in the port.

Stating that as a goodwill gesture the Government had removed one police picket from Dibbapalem shore on Monday, he said that the remaining pickets would be withdrawn in phases if the villagers refrain from issuing provocative statements.

Referring to the demand for withdrawal of cases filed against fishermen, he said that it would be considered by the Home Minister, Mr K. Jana Reddy.
