FOR A REGULAR ROLE: Casual labourers at the Hero Honda factory at Gurgaon protesting against the management in the factory premises on Tuesday. - Kamal Narang

New Delhi , April 11

After Honda Motorcycle and Scooter India, labour trouble has affected production at yet another automobile plant in Haryana. Production at two-wheeler major Hero Honda's facility in Gurgaon was hit following a strike by contract workers, demanding regularisation of services and higher pay, even as talks were on to end the agitation.

"We are demanding regularisation of services of the contract workers who have been working for the company for the last 5-10 years on the basis of seniority," a member of the contract workers' union said.

Production at the plant, which has a capacity of about 6,000 units per day, was hit following the strike. "We have been on strike since Monday and there is no production going on right now. There are about 1,200 permanent workers, while 4,000 are on contract,'' the union member said adding that they would continue the protest till their demands were met.

Company sources however said only about 2,000 workers stayed away from work.

Other demands of the workers included compensatory off, medical facilities and salary accounts in banks. The workers were demanding regularisation of 1,000 contract workers immediately.

Negotiations were on between the workers and the management on Tuesday. Sources pointed out that some of the workers' demands including confirmation of 100 workers every year and regularisation of all workers by 2010 had been accepted though there was no formal communication of the same.

Hero Honda on its part said that it was following responsible corporate practices and ``for an early resolution, the company is extending full cooperation to all parties concerned - the Government agencies, the contractors and their workers.''
