Oilseeds & Edible Oil Industry & Economy - Exports & Imports SEA seeks clarification Our Bureau
Mumbai , April 14 The Solvent Extractors' Association of India (SEA), a premier association of the vegetable oil industry and trade, has sought clarification for import of genetically modified food, feed, genetically modified organism (GMOs) and living modified organisms (LMOs). In a memorandum sent to Mr B. S. Parsheera, Additional Secretary and Chairman, GEAC, Ministry of Environment & Forests, Mr A. R. Sharma, President of SEA, said: "Soyabean oil produced from GM soyabean seed contains no GM characteristics as all the characteristics of passes into soyameal. In view of this, we would like to have some early clarifications as number of soyabean oil vessels are expected to arrive at ports."
PRIOR APPROVAL?
In a memorandum, he asked if soyabean oil (crude or refined) that does not contain GM characteristics was covered under the recent notification. He also wanted to know if prior approval under 18(B) for import of soyabean oil is required from the genetic engineering approval committee (GEAC) and, if so, the required rules and procedure. And whether mere declaration about GM soyabean oil at the time of import is sufficient or prior approval from GEAC is also necessary.
