NTPC unit exports fly ash to Qatar

Hyderabad , April 12

NTPC Simhadri has dispatched the first consignment of 7,500 tonnes of clean fly ash to Qatar.

The Lebanon-based Environment Building Materials (EBM) is lifting the material and reaching it to the Gulf State, where it would be used in the construction sector, according to NTPC officials.

The EBM would facilitate transhipment of 54,000 tonnes in the future. The consignment from the Simhadri super thermal station in Visakhapatnam left on Monday. The power plant generates 4,000 tonnes of fly ash per day.

NTPC had set up a subsidiary -- NTPC Vidyut Vyapar Nigam -- to exclusively trade in fly ash and also popularise its multiple uses in the country.

In the recent past, companies from the US also held discussions with major Indian players in the power sector to explore the possibility of exporting fly ash to some of the countries where it could be utilised. Within the country also policy initiatives have been under way to increase the use of fly ash and consequently reduce its negative impact on the environment.
