Service tax collections go up in Hyderabad

Our Bureau

Hyderabad , April 12

The Customs, Central Excise and Service Tax (Hyderabad Zone) has registered a record service tax collections of Rs 709.70 crore during 2005-06 against Rs 440.03 crore in 2004-05.

With the service tax registering a whopping 61.28 per cent growth, the officials were busy carving out a separate commissionerate to focus more on this avenue.

"There is a serious thinking on this issue. There will be a separate commissionerate for service tax," said Mr Abhijit Bhattacharya, Chief Commissioner of the zone. He, however, refused to give any timeframe.

Addressing a press conference here, he said revenue from customs had gone up to Rs 495 crore from Rs 405 crore, showing a growth of 22.29 per cent.

Collections from central excise, however, had gone down to Rs 2,786 crore from Rs 2,928 crore, showing a decline of 4.85 per cent. The dip was attributed to the shift in earnings from petro products to Visakhapatnam, where the refineries were located.

BREAK-UP

If the earnings from petro products (Rs 393.15 crore) were deducted to compare with last year's figure, this segment actually showed a growth of 9.91 per cent with additional earnings of Rs 251.24 crore in 2005-06.

Segments such as pharmaceuticals, cigarettes and cement contributed the most. Top 20 commodities including cigarettes, cements, motor spirit and machinery contributed 82.42 per cent (Rs 2,292.22 crore) of the total central excise collections.

Of the Rs 495 crore collected in customs, top 20 commodities including gold, chemicals, plastics and electrical machinery contributed Rs 427.2 crore, forming 86.31 per cent.
