Farmer and famine

Famine, one thought, was a thing of the past. Yet, suicides by farmers seem to dispel this notion. There is an urgent need to arrest this trend. In the article `Ploughed out' (Business Line, April 12), two important issues were raised — making agriculture a profitable business and debt trap. Much has been written on the steps to be taken to make farming profitable. Besides, the farmer needs risk coverage for yields and price. In fact, the decision to import wheat and farmers' protest indicate failure of the Government's farm policy.

Villages should have projects for mobilising savings in times of good harvest and for assistance in times of need.
