One-day spotlight

Not the one to give up on publicity, the Commerce Minister, Mr Kamal Nath, was surprisingly absent from media glare the day after he presented the Annual Supplement to the Foreign Trade Policy, despite having committed to turn up for FICCI and CII sessions on the new initiatives. Instead, the Commerce Secretary, Mr S. N. Menon, and the Director-General of Foreign Trade, Mr K. T. Chako, stood in for the Minister. It turns out that due to a last-minute decision, the Minister had to wing his way to Jakarta the very night the Annual Supplement was presented. So, unlike the Finance Minister, Mr P. Chidambaram, Mr Kamal Nath had to be content with a single-day publicity for what is his equivalent of the general Budget.
