Restructuring Agri-Biz & Commodities - Sugar Kothari Sugars transfers chemical biz to Primetra Our Bureau
Chennai , April 13 Kothari Sugars and Chemicals Ltd has transferred its chemical business to Primetra Technologies Pvt Ltd, according to information provided by the company to the stock exchange. It may be recalled that the company decided to exit the chemical business to focus on sugar and related businesses. Chennai-based Primetra Technologies was registered in October 2004. Kothari Sugars' chemical business includes a polybutene plant that depends on Chennai Petroleum Corporation Ltd for its feedstock. The market for the product has been volatile and imports have been a major concern, company officials had said earlier. Kothari Sugars has over the last two years sold off its businesses in nitroaromatics and nitric acid. The nitroaromatics plant at Karaikal, Pondicherry, was sold to Chemplast Sanmar and the nitric acid plant at Sangareddy, Andhra Pradesh, to EMMENNAR Biotech Pvt Ltd, Hyderabad. Kothari Sugars now has a sugar mill with a capacity to crush 2,900 tonnes sugarcane a day, a 9,000-kilolitre distillery with facility to produce ethanol and a cogeneration plant. It has leased a 3,500 tonne a day cooperative sugar mill in Karnataka, the Pandavapura SSK Ltd in Mandya district, on a 7-year lease. Reports also say that the company is setting up a 3,000 tonne a day sugar mill at Thirumanur, Perambalur district, Tamil Nadu. This mill will also have a cogeneration plant.
