Goa Govt, Leela Group ink pact for international golf course

Panaji , April 13

The Goa Government will soon sign a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Leela Group of Hotels

for setting up a full size international 18-hole golf course at Betul in south Goa.

The State Government, in its bid to promote high-end tourism, has planned to facilitate setting up of golf courses either through joint venture or in the private sector according to a proposal in its latest annual Budget. The Tourism Minister, Mr Wilfred de Souza, told Business Line on that the Government wanted to put certain conditions for the promoters of golf course projects, such as, it will be kept open for all and that the promoters will have to acquire land at market price. The Government would only help the party acquire the land. The terms and conditions between the Leela Group and Government have been "more or less agreed" upon, he said and the process of land acquisition would begin soon.

Stating that the Government wanted "many golf courses to come up", Mr de Souza said they would be set up either in the private sector or through the joint venture route.

The companies which want the Government to acquire land has to deposit 80 per cent of the estimated cost of the land, he said.
