Bangalore, April 13

Aravind Eye Hospital, the reputed group of charitable hospitals, on Thursday announced the setting up of a School of Optometry based in Madurai, which is being supported by Essilor India Pvt, a wholly owned subsidiary of the French international ophthalmic optical products company.

The school will offer a two-year Diploma in Optometry, which is recognised by the Madurai Kamaraj University and other short-term courses on hospital and optical related specialisations. A four-year degree course in optometry course will also be available shortly.

The school has also planned a unique project to benefit the rural population by training students in the age group of five to ten from rural areas each year. They will be trained in basic refraction, eye care and dispensing so that they can help people in their surrounding villages. According to Dr G. Venkatswamy Chairman of Aravind Eye Hospital, "The optometry school is a continuation of our efforts to enhance eye care standards Mr B. Jayanth, MD, Essilor India, said, "We are proud to be associated with the Aravind School of Optometry. Essilor is a pioneer in the field of education and training on eye health."
