New strategy needed to tackle water crisis in urban areas

Our Bureau

Chennai , April 17

, A combination of improved urban governance and public private partnership will help tackle the challenge of water management in modern cities, according to Mr B. Suresh, Chief Executive Officer, Mahindra Acres Consulting Engineers.

At a technical meet on industrial water conservation and management here on Monday, he said that urban local bodies by themselves faced financial constraints and capability. Public private partnership would enable the private sector to bring in its resources and expertise.

But deficiency in urban water supply systems wasnot just a question of funds but of policy support and putting in place a sustainable mechanism - primarily people paying for services.

Private sector too needed to look beyond just urban water management and take a hand in rainwater harvest mechanisms, watershed development and zero water discharge.

Mr V. Thangavelu, Managing Director, Chennai Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board, said the three years of drought starting from 2003 has driven home the lesson - conserve water. The board was itself conserving water by minimising leakages and wastage, stringent accounting and encouraging rainwater harvesting.

Mr Rafeeque Ahmed, Chairman, Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry - Tamil Nadu State Council, which organised the meet, said that industries had a key role to play in water conservation. Mr Ahmed who is also the Chairman, Council for Leather Exports, said that effluent treatment was a key issue for the tanning industry. The industry has set aside over Rs 150 crore to achieve zero discharge in Tamil Nadu over the next two years.
