Egg, chicken prices recover

Our Bureau

Hyderabad , April 17

Hit hard by the crisis triggered by the bird flu reports for months, the poultry industry in Andhra Pradesh is now showing signs of recovery. The consumption of eggs and chicken meat has picked up.

The price of the broiler bird sold earlier at Rs 10 has now gone up to Rs 24 and the price of egg increased to Rs 0.70 from Rs 0.50.

The State accounted for one-third of eggs produced in the country at 4.5 crore eggs a day and 20 crore broiler chicks a year.

GOVT STEPS IN

"The Government has taken up several measures to help the industry tide over the crisis," a press release from the Chief Minister's Office said.

Nearly 200 blood samples of the birds were sent to the High Security Animal Disease Laboratory (HIADL) at Bhopal since 2004-05. All the samples were tested negative. Another 688 blood samples were sent to the Bhopal lab for verification.

Following reports of bird flu in Maharashtra, the Andhra Pradesh Government sent 873 blood samples from across the State the lab. None of them was tested positive.

The Government ruled out chances of the influx of the virus from outside, as the State was a leader in exports.

Testing facility

Meanwhile, Dr L. Mohan, Director,Animal Husbandry Department , has said that a testing facility would come up at Bangalore.

Addressing a seminar organised by the Solvent Extractors' Association of India here on Sunday, he said Bangalore was among three other locations identified by the Centre to set up the laboratories. He hoped that the sales would touch the normal levels in the next 15 days.
