Policy on oil

This is with reference to "Oil on the boil, again," (Business Line, April 17): It has been pointed out that the Government may have to act on the twin issues of taxation of petroleum products and subsidies.

But it should have a short-term and a long-term policy. For now it may adjust the price by reducing the tax. However, the subsidies need to be phased out and the domestic fuel price linked to international levels.

At the same time, those under BPL require continued support. This again raises the question of defining the poverty line and gathering the right statistics.

As a long-term policy we will have to aim at achieving self-sufficiency.

Besides, expanding exploration and acquisitions, developing nuclear power, non-conventional energy have potential and need to be developed.

Bio-fuel is another hope. And we have to concentrate on R&D.

A clear road map is to be prepared to go forward.
