Big plans To foray into managed services segment To expand portfolio in broadcasting sector From a single-country company to become a global one
New Delhi , April 19 Videsh Sanchar Nigam Ltd said on Wednesday that it was lining up major investments for rolling out broadband services for the retail segment. The company was also foraying in a big way in managed services segment and was also looking to expand its portfolio in the broadcasting sector, it said. "VSNL is also planning to increase its presence in the international telecom market in a bid to compensate for the loss in market share in the Indian International long-distance segment over the last two years. From being a single-country company, VSNL now has become a global company. We expect more than 50 per cent of our revenues from international business and 25 per cent of our employees are outside India," said Mr N Srinath, Executive Director, VSNL at a press conference here. Hesaid that VSNL was taking the cable route to push its broadband services to retail users. "We are tying up with cable operators across the country and reach to the end consumer. We are making investments wherever the cable operators network needs augmenting and this includes laying our own cable," he added. VSNL has already partnered 2,000 cable service providers to provide the last mile link for its broadband services. Mr Srinath said that the company expected to launch fixed line telecom services in South Africa by June-July this year. "We got the licence in December last year. Project work is on and we hope to start service in June-July, 2006," he said. VSNL owns 26 per cent stake in South African telecom operator SNO. The project cost is estimated to be $ 1billion spread over a period of four years. SNO has the licence to provide all except mobile telecom services in that country. Hesaid that VSNL would also look to expand its portfolio in the broadcasting segment. "We are already offering the up-linking and other infrastructure platform to broadcasters. We may want to get into content side of the broadcasting segment. We are yet to decide on it," he confirmed.
