Farmer suicides

This has reference to the article `Farmers bear the cross' (Business Line, April 20). There is no other sector in which such large number of suicides happen. The Government should tackle the root cause rather than continue the same policy. The suicides should end. Besides policy failure, communication gap is a reason.

The Government should quickly initiate short-term measures, involving people at village and panchayat levels, and revise policies to remove the basic causes.

In this connection, `Are we killing the self-employed?' (Business Line, April 20) is relevant. The farm sector is a major self-employed group. And with the introduction of new, improved implements and methods, unemployment is growing in this sector also. The new employment-guarantee scheme may be a source of relief.
