Chennai , April 20.

Amco Batteries Ltd, a part of the Amalgamations group, hopes to double its turnover in the next 2-3 years, according to Ms Jayashree Venkatraman, Vice-President of the company.

Addressing the golden jubilee celebrations of the company here today, she said the company had been able to achieve a turnover of Rs 100 crore despite a reduction in unit realisation over the last few years due to intense competition.

She said the company now produced about 1.5 lakh batteries a month and expected to grow, covering a wider range of batteries. The growth was expected to be 30-35 per cent year on year, she said.

Mr A. Sivasailam, Chairman, Amalgamations Group, recalled the growth of the company over the years. It got technical assistance from Gould Inc of the US between 1959 and 1968, which helped increase its turnover.

With a collaboration with Yuasa Corporation of Japan, Amco became the first battery company to supply batteries to newer generation two-wheelers manufactured in the country.

He said the collaboration with Yuasa ended in 2004 and Amco has since emerged with a greater resurgence and more dynamism for better products.

OEM fraternity

Its original equipment fraternity include Hero Honda, Honda Motorcycles and Scooters Ltd, TVS Motor, Bajaj, LML, Kinetic Motors and Enfield, in the two-wheeler segment, and TAFE, VST Tillers, SAS Motors, Cummins India Ltd, Toyota Kirloskar Motor Ltd, General Motors and others.

Mr C. Rajagopalan, Director, Amco Batteries, said a few years ago the company started manufacturing Nickel Cadmium batteries for hi-tech applications.

This was recently converted into a joint venture between the Amalgamations group and SAFT of France.

The joint venture was expected to perform well with high-end technology and sophisticated products like batteries for missiles, torpedoes, aircraft and submarines.

On the occasion, Mr Sivasailam presented golden jubilee commemoration mementoes to some of the original equipment manufacturers.
