Events States - Andhra Pradesh AP `Rytu Chaitanya Yatras' cover 23 lakh farmers Our Bureau
Hyderabad , April 21 The `Rytu Chaitanya Yatras', launched by the Andhra Pradesh Government to gear up the farming community for the upcoming kharif season, has so far covered 23 lakh farmers in over 52,000 habitations across the State. Officials from the Ministries of Agriculture and Horticulture interacted with the farmers and explained how they could increase profitability by reducing cost of production. They also updated the farmers on improving quality, the importance of mixed crops and judicious use of water. The Government has agreed to a proposal to extend the yatras by two more days in order to cover more villages.
SEMINARS PLANNED
Announcing this here at a press conference on Thursday, Mr N. Raghuveera Reddy, Minister for Agriculture and Civil Supplies, said these yatras would be followed up by `sadassus' (seminars) in the first week of May. These seminars would be held in all the revenue divisions of the State. "Four to five farmers in each village have been selected. These farmers would listen to experts and witness demos on a variety of issues related to kharif crops," he said. These farmers, in turn, would act as resource persons when they go back to their respective villages. The Chief Minister, Dr Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy, would launch the seminars in three districts on May 2. They would conclude on May 6.
Advani flayed
Referring to the statement made by the senior BJP leader, Mr L.K. Advani, on suicides, Mr Raghuveera Reddy recalled that the crisis began during the NDA Government at the Centre and Telugu Desam Government in the State. On Advani's suggestion that a JPC (Joint Parliamentary Committee) should probe into the suicides by farmers, he alleged that the NDA and TDP Governments had tried to put the incidences of suicides under the carpet instead of coming to the rescue of the farmers in distress. "When we sat down to compensate the kin, our hands are tied in most cases as there was no evidence to substantiate the cause of death," he said.
