A CRAFTSMAN weaving reed bamboo near Adimali in Kereala. Traditional bamboo craftsmen, numbering nearly 40,000 families in Kerala, still remain in the unorganised sector.

Efforts to modernise the sector through design and technology inputs and formation of craft clusters are yet to take off in earnest.

A government programme to provide reorientation training to 5,000 traditional artisans in two years could cover hardly 500 persons in the first 10 months.
