Regulatory Bodies & Rulings Industry & Economy - Radio/TV TRAI paper on cable rates for commercial users Our Bureau
New Delhi , April 21 The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) has issued a consultation paper on whether or not cable tariffs should be different for commercial subscribers such as hotels, guest houses, offices and hospitals. The discussion has been initiated as the TDSAT had earlier said that TRAI's 2004 tariff order was meant primarily for domestic consumer, does not cover commercial services.
Definition sought
The consultation paper seeks to know if the tariff regulation should cover all kinds of commercial establishments or whether some categories can be omitted. The paper has said that there are problems and difficulties in distinguishing between commercial subscribers on the basis of this definition as it brings within its ambit not only hotels and restaurants but also a whole range of establishments in the organised and unorganised sector such as small shops, hospitals and offices. Citing an example of a shopkeeper installing a television in his shop for personal viewing, the regulator has asked how this would be categorised. TRAI will receive comments from stakeholders till May 12.
