The collaboration has also given scope for IIT-M to start two new courses Example of industry-academic ties

Chennai , April 24

Bharat Heavy Electricals Ltd and the Indian Institute of Technology-Madras have signed a memorandum of understanding for collaborative research in the areas of design of boilers, manufacturing, metallurgical engineering, mechanical engineering, information technology and other areas of mutual interest.

With the help of BHEL, Tiruchi, IIT-M will establish a research centre at the BHEL campus for the purpose. IIT-M will select MS/PhD research scholars to work as research associates/project associates, said Prof M. S. Ananth, Director, IIT-M, at a press conference here today.

BHEL on its part will make available its research facilities and laboratories for the purpose, said Dr V. Gopalakrishnan, Executive Director, BHEL-Tiruchi.

The collaboration has also given scope for IIT-M to start two new courses — one on energy engineering and another on welding engineering. The courses will start from the academic year 2006-07, said Prof Ananth. Back in 2001, the two organisations had begun a collaboration to start a one-year, full time postgraduate certification programme in computational engineering.

The officials said the tie-up was a good example of industry-academics collaboration. The courses help both institutions. For example, BHEL, which runs the Welding Research Institute in Tiruchi, will be able to take the help of IIT students to expand research in the subject.

BHEL, which designs power plant boilers for handling a variety of coals, is also interested in getting into coal research. The course on energy engineering will be of help in this area.
