AP Govt uses NIN tech in fortified wheat flour

Hyderabad , April 24

The Andhra Pradesh Government has employed a technology developed by National Institute of Nutrition (NIN) to supply atta (wheat flour) fortified with iron, vitamin-A, and vitamin B12 through the public distribution system (PDS).

This move is aimed at addressing micronutrient deficiencies in the poor.

The pilot project is being implemented in Warangal and Ranga Reddy districts by the Civil Supplies Department. Fortified atta is being sold at Rs 12 a kg.

"We are ready to support initiatives like these," said Dr B. Sesikeran, who recently took over as Director of NIN.

Speaking to newspersons on Friday, he said that the issue of malnutrition was largely attributed to macronutrients earlier. But the focus had also been on micronutrients of late.

On the activities of the institute, he said that the Cancer Study Group had identified anti-cancer and anti-oxidant properties in several spices used in India. The institute would set up a facility to assess safety issues related to genetically modified foods.
