Ford targets 50 pc rise in sales

New Delhi , April 24

Helped by growing sales of the midsize car Fiesta, Ford India is targeting a 50 per cent increase in sales this year to 60,000 units.

``The Fiesta has been doing well for us and we expect the model to sell around 4,000 units a month,'' Ford India General Manager (Sales and Field operations), Mr Nalin Kapoor, said on Monday. The company's sales in 2005 were around 40,000 units, comprising mostly the Ikon, which has been the mainstay for Ford in India for quite some time.

Asked whether with the success of Fiesta, Ford would gradually phase out the Ikon, Mr Kapoor said there were no such immediate plans. ``We have repositioned the Ikon and are targeting it at young professionals,'' he said, adding that the company expected to do around 1,000 units of the Ikon a month. The company has, however, phased out the 1.6 litre variant of the Ikon, which is now only available in the 1.3 litre variant.
