Big German cos `hesitant' on India

Our Bureau

Kolkata , April 24

Big-sized German companies may remain hesitant to make substantial investments in India, till it further develops its internal market. India cannot be a preferred outsourcing destination for German companies in the area of manufacturing activities just on the strength of its low-cost workforce.

Speaking at an interactive session on `Indo-German Bilateral Trade: Focus West Bengal', Mr Bernd Bochardt, Director (South Asia) of German foreign office in Berlin, said that German companies, mainly in the small & medium sectors, might be interested in IT, ITES and bio-technology sectors in India. Whereas, in the automobile sector, German companies would be interested only in the locations where they have already gained operational experience.

In reply to a question, the German diplomat said, "India may take long years to overcome China in the area of economic development. In fact, India lagged behind by at least 15 years as compared to China."

He said that many German companies had plans to open back offices (call centres) in India, but they were unable to do so, owing to paucity of people who knew German language. .
