EVE POWER: Women taking tea leaves plucked from a garden to a factory on the outskirts of Guwahati in Assam. With onset of April, the peak plucking season for the tea industry has begun. Last year, the country produced a record 928 million kg of tea compared with 820 million kg in 2004. Assam is considered the heart of the tea industry, accounting for about 55 per cent of the total production. The total production of Assam tea was about 475 million kg last year. Part of the credit for this trend goes to the women labourers, who are actively involved in this industry.
