Info-Tech - New Products & Services Intel to unveil vPro brand for business PCs Our Bureau
MORE SECURE: Mr Sunil Kaimal , Regional Marketing Manager ( Business Clients) at Beijing, explaining the features of the new vPro platform in Hyderabad on Tuesday. - P.V.Sivakumar
Hyderabad , April 25 Intel Corporation announced on Tuesday its move to launch a new platform vPro during the second quarter this year, that promises to change the way desktops function in a distributed environment. Targeted at businesses and enterprise users, it combines the features of a processor and IT management, and builds security in the same platform. Overall, it effectively changes the brand positioning of Intel from being a semiconductor manufacturer to a technology solution provider. Mr Amar Babu, Managing Director of Intel Technology India, said, "Like the Intel Centrino mobile technology, which changed laptops, Intel vPro brings together innovations in its processors, chipsets, networking technologies and software."
Benefits galore
It is estimated that about 85 per cent of the overall costs go to IT management, which is a nightmare for technology managers. The vPro-based technology helps in such a situation. Most of the security breaches are on a specific PC and this gets populated. Through this platform, it would be possible to identify and isolate a PC and easily repair and maintain, Mr Babu said. This platform has been developed in partnership with technology companies such as Computer Associates, Zenith and Symantec. The vPro heartbeat is powered by a dual-core processor and is backed by a 64-bit architecture, and has built-in power saving features. Computer Associates (CA) on Tuesday announced support for Intel that enables CA customers to realise the benefits of new Intel technology whose core message is cost reduction. Mr Prabhat Andleigh, Director - Development, CA India Technology, said, "Our combined effort would reduce the IT workload of organisations considerably. CA has worked closely with Intel to design management and security solutions. Most of the times, IT can be managed remotely, and this is an added feature." This technology has support from software vendors such as Adobe, Check Point, Cisco, and Microsoft, to name a few. The pricing of this platform has not yet been finalised. Mr Babu said that this was not in response to AMD's new processors, but something the company was working over the years in partnership with other technology players.
