Use information technology (IT) to solve the country's societal problems. IT is critical to overcome deficiency in various sectors, including education, Mr Ravi Venkatesan, Chairman, Microsoft India, told students of Great Lakes Institute of Management.

There is enormous opportunity available to solve domestic problems using IT in rural areas, education and healthcare. "In this process, you (students) can also make huge amount of wealth," he said at the inaugural function of the institute's third batch of Post Graduate Programme in Management.

According to him, it is time for the country to move from renting IT services to creating intellectual property. A survey done last year revealed that among a list of 30 countries, IT adoption in India was the lowest, and the country was even behind Thailand, Vietnam and the Philippines, he said.
