SMS cutting into voice usage: IDC

Our Bureau

Bangalore , April 27

Mobiles are showing an average usage of less than an hour for voice (incoming and outgoing calls). This astonishing fact came to light in a survey by IDC India.

"Reduction in voice usage is due to an increasing number of subscribers being from low-spending market segments such as workers and students," Mr Shailendra Gupta, Manager, User Research, IDC (India) Ltd, said. They mostly use SMS (text messages), which are cheaper.

More SMS

An average Indian mobile user sends 6 messages (SMS) in a day and receives 8. This reflects the SMS marketing by operators — on various downloads such as ringtones, bill related information and contests, the report said.

Messages received from public utility services such as banks, railways and airlines also contribute to the higher rate of incoming SMS.

MMS (multimedia messaging service), along with digicam and FM radio, speakerphones, will drive the upgradation of mobile handsets this year, according to the IDC India Mobile Handset Usage Satisfaction Study 2006.
