Indo-Pak shipping protocol

Pakistan is awaiting India's formal nod for concluding revised shipping protocol. The protocol was earlier scheduled to be signed in March but has been delayed as India is yet to announce the date for signing it. Meanwhile, Pakistan's Cabinet has given its consent. The Pakistani shipping delegation, due to visit New Delhi to sign the protocol, is waiting for the Indian Government, which has shown interest in amending the present protocol, to firm up the date. The present shipping protocol, signed between the two countries some 30 years ago providing for bilateral shipping, is found to be inadequate to serve present-day requirements. It is now felt that there is need for amending the protocol enabling shipping companies of both the countries to lift third country cargo from each other's ports.

Such liberalisation will boost not only the trade relations between the two countries, but also the shipping services with the likely participation of private carriers. Right now there are various restrictions in this regard.
