Stress on quality at India Dairy Congress

Our Bureau

Pune , April 30

World milk production is estimated at 650 million tonnes for 2006 and is growing at a compounded annual growth rate (CAGR) of 1.1 per cent. And India ranks first in the world in terms of milk production with a total of 96.1 million tonnes (mt) for 2005-06 and records a CAGR of four per cent. But are the farmers happy? Are they reaping the benefits of their fruits of labour? These are some of the concerns raised during the India Dairy Congress 2006 held in Pune today.

Consumer awareness

The two-day seminar proposes to address the problems faced by the dairy industry in the country and the possible solutions that can be formed. Prof L.K. Vaswani, IRMA, Anand, notes that though about 96.1 mt of milk is produced on an annual basis in the country, the organised sector contributed only to about 15 per cent of the total production while the unorganised sector took the major chunk. He pointed out that there was also a need to create consumer awareness about the quality of milk and its products that reached the consumer's hand. He said the organised sector needed to grow in a big way and for this the private sector had to make inroads by bringing in investments at the grassroot level.

Prof Vaswani also pointed out that the current food quality and safety standards required traceability i.e., continuous monitoring of products and supplies throughout the supply chain. He added that there were two alternative models of dairy products safety, which included regulatory control and sterilisation and making quality and safety along the supply chain from cow to the consumer.

Milk output to grow 1.9%

Mr G. Chandrashekhar, Editor- Commodities and Agri-business, Business Line, said the world milk output was projected to grow 1.9 per cent over the next 10 years to touch 747 mt by 2015. According to him, the output growth would be mainly from the BRIC (Brazil, Russia, India and China) countries, Oceania and the US.
