Need for rice export market in TN

Our Bureau

Coimbatore, April 29

The establishment of an export market for rice in the State would help in its export promotion, the Vice-Chancellor of the Tamil Nadu Agricultural University, Dr C. Ramasamy said.

Flagging off the major issues and strategies to be pursued for development of the rice sector at a three-day meet of Rice Scientists, Dr Ramasamy, while expressing concern on the stagnant food grain production in general, and rice in particular, noted that rice trade was well established on the export front with annual export volumes reaching the six-million tonnes mark. "Basmati rice accounts for a major share of this export volume. But exports can be further enhanced by focusing on non-basmati rice varieties. The establishment of an export market for rice would help strengthen it further," he said.
