Govt in talks with 5 countries for gas supply

Mumbai , April 30

The Union Government is negotiating with five countries, including Qatar, for supplying gas to the Dabhol power project. The project would be generating power to its full capacity of 2,184 MW by January 1, 2007, Mr M.S. Srinivasan, Secretary, Ministry Of Petroleum and Natural Gas, said here on Sunday.

Mr Srinivasan said he was confident of completing the gas supply talks with these countries in the next few months. There have been some delays in finalising the gas supply contract for the project, he said.

The Dabhol project, now called the Ratnagiri Gas Power Pvt Ltd, is designed for using LNG to power its 2,184-MW capacity. Due to global supply shortage, the Government had decided to use naphtha for running the 740 MW Block 2 of the project, 6-8 hours a day for 50-55 days, from May 1.

The project had stopped activities as its promoter Enron Corporation and sole customer Maharashtra State Electricity Board (MSEB) were locked in a dispute over the cost of electricity produced by it.

An agency report, quoting Ratnagiri Gas Power's CEO said on Sunday that the project should hopefully commence activities from Monday. However, there were indications earlier that the Government may not be able to restart operations by May 1, given in the main delay in Customs clearance for the plant's imported software and hardware.
