2-day meet to discuss industrialisation

The Maharashtra Government along with Maharashtra Economic Development Council (MEDC) would be jointly holding a two-day international conference to discuss strategies for rapid industrialisation of the State.

Commencing from May 4, `Maharashtra Vision 2006' conference will focus on sectors like energy, value-added agriculture, industry, SEZs and Mumbai as growth centre, according to Mr M.N. Chaini, President, MEDC.

Addressing the media on Friday, Mr Chaini said that the conference would also discuss an ambitious idea of raising the annual income of every person in the State to Rs 1 lakh due to industrial growth of over 10 per cent.

He said that it was possible to reach the mark if Maharashtra's GDP of $80 billion is tripled to $240 billion in 10 years.

Mr Chaini said that the issue of SEZ would be prominently taken up in the conference as each zone is worth $20 billion.

Besides the Chief Minister, Mr Vilasrao Deshmukh, and his cabinet colleagues, several industrialists, technocrats and foreign trade commissioners were expected to participate in the conference, he said.
