Quotas in IITs

Reserving seats in the IITs, IIMs and other premier educational institutions based on caste is not the only option to uplift those belonging to the socially backward castes. Such a move seems politically motivated.

Governments ought to concentrate on setting up quality elementary schools and high schools, employing the best teachers with attractive salaries and providing for suitable infrastructure.

Efforts must be taken to make education, lodging and boarding free for the socially-backward castes.

Such an approach will lay the foundations for all classes of students to be able to eventually compete on a fairly level playing field for entry into the best institutions of higher learning.
