Dunlop unions refuse to accept payment of past wages

Our Bureau

Kolkata, May 1

On Sunday Dunlop labour unions refused to accept the first instalment payment of past wages on the ground that wrong calculation methods had been employed resulting in a smaller amount being paid to each worker.

The unions, however, did not disrupt ongoing maintenance work in the facility.

The CITU affiliated Dunlop workers union said it wanted the workers to be paid on a lump-sum basis and not on a pro-rata basis. According to the union General Secretary, Mr Dipankar Roy, the Dunlop Management had tried to deprive the workers of their legitimate dues.

Describing the incident as "unfortunate", the company Chairman, Mr P.K. Ruia, later told newspersons that the payments had been arranged as per the terms and conditions of the wage pact agreed to with the unions.

According to Mr Ruia, all 4,278 workers of Dunlop were to receive payments of up to Rs 30,000 against their outstanding wages on a "pro-rata basis". The total estimated outgo on this one-time settlement would be Rs 12 crore.
