Foreign Trade Iranian Minister in India to speed up gas pipeline project Our Bureau
New Delhi , May 1 The Iranian Deputy Oil Minister, Mr Mohammad Hadi Nejad Hosseinian, has arrived in India to take forward the ongoing discussions on the proposed Iran-Pakistan-India (IPI) gas pipeline project. Soon after his arrival, the Deputy Minister had a high-level meeting with the Secretary, Petroleum and Natural Gas, Mr M.S. Srinivasan. The Iranian delegation is visiting India to speed up the gas pipeline project and work on the fine-print of the deal. The Iranian Minister's visit gains significance in the backdrop of the recent meeting of the Petroleum Minister, Mr Murli Deora, in Doha with his Iranian and Pakistani counterparts. At Doha, the Petroleum Minister took the initiative of requesting an informal tripartite ministerial level meeting. While considerable progress has been made with regard to the project, a few technical issues are to be taken up at the tripartite secretarial level talks scheduled in Pakistan later this month. Issues related to the drafting of the agreement are expected to be discussed at the meeting between the Petroleum Minister and the Iranian Deputy Oil Minister on Tuesday. Mr Hosseinian has arrived here with a high-level delegation after a visit to Pakistan. Technical experts from India, Pakistan and Iran are likely to finalise a framework agreement for the ambitious $7.4-billion gas pipeline deal, which would be signed at a ministerial meeting in Tehran in June.
