Affirmative action

This is with reference to, "Affirmative action: The Malaysian case," (Business Line, May 1): This was also the period when the manufacturing, particularly semi-conductors and electronics, started moving further to Malaysia and Thailand. Malaysia's stringent immigration laws, marginalisation of the rich and economically stronger Chinese community, and the boom in oil prices in the 1970s were all strong influences.

The Indian community still largely works in plantations and petty trade, and has not fully benefited from the economic boom.If this so-called success of Malaysia's affirmative action is one of reasons causes for the Government's policy of reservation in higher education and private sector employment, then we have a serious issue on hand.
