Renewed buying props up spot rubber

Aravindan

Kottayam , May 2

Spot rubber rates moved up on Tuesday. The covering groups propelled the prices by 50 paise to attract renewed purchase orders from the tyre sector. RSS 4 improved to Rs 90 a kg both at Kottayam and Kochi from Rs 89.50 a kg on Saturday. The buying from the consuming sectors was comparatively narrow though the selected grades were firm amidst low arrivals.

Shortage of rubber continued to cripple the main marketing centres. Even village markets suffer from acute short supply, dealers said.

Futures firm

The rubber futures ruled firm on NMCE as most of the global commodity markets except TOCOM finished better on Tuesday. But the domestic market seemed to be loosing its strength as the trading volumes were low-key.

The May contract was quoted at Rs 89.70 (Rs 89.36); June contract at Rs 90.70 (Rs 90.29); July at Rs 89.77 (Rs 89.56) and August contract at Rs 88.80 (Rs 88.76) per kg for RSS 4. The transactions totalled 469 tonnes till mid-session.

The June futures for RSS 3 was steady at Rs 96.99 a kg at Bangkok.

Sport rates (Rs per kg) were: RSS-4: Rs 90 (Rs 89.50); RSS-5: Rs 89 (Rs 88.50); ungraded: Rs 88 (Rs 87.50); ISNR 20: Rs 88.50 (Rs 88) and latex 60 per cent (per ltr): Rs 63 (Rs 63)
