Wipro said that Mr William Arthur (Bill) Owens, former Chief Executive Officer and Vice-Chairman of Nortel, is joining its board of directors.

With his addition, six of the seven directors of Wipro will be independent directors. Mr Owens' appointment will be effective July 1, said a Wipro press release.

Mr Owens was the CEO and Vice-Chairman of Nortel till November 2005. Under his leadership, Nortel was re-established as a strong, stable, ethical Fortune 500 company, the release said.
