Power Centre to meet northern States on grid discipline Our Bureau
New Delhi , May 2 The Centre has called a meeting with State Governments in the northern region this week to persuade them to maintain grid discipline in order to avoid any breakdown of the transmission network. "We have called a meeting of Energy Secretaries and Chief Secretaries of the northern region States this week to review the situation. We will have to be more forthright and convey the message to the States so that load management is done in a manner that a grid collapse is averted," the Power Secretary, Mr R.V. Shahi, told reporters on the sidelines of a seminar here. The States that are currently facing a power crisis include Punjab, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, Delhi, Jammu and Kashmir, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh and Uttaranchal. The meeting would take stock of the scenario, particularly in view of the recent directives of the Central Electricity Regulatory Commission regarding grid discipline, he said.
Overdrawal of power
Last week, the CERC had warned state electricity boards and distribution companies against overdrawing power from the northern grid after Power Grid Corporation of India Ltd lodged complaints against them. But, even after the warning, states such as Uttar Pradesh have been drawing much more electricity from the grid than their allocated schedule. Mr Shahi said power shortages were expected to continue this month as peak hour requirements in all northern region States, including in the National Capital, continues to be higher this summer. However, hydro generation in the region has picked up with the Nathpa Jhakri power plant in Himachal Pradesh generating more than 1,000 MW, he said.
