Tea Higher volume at Coonoor tea auction P.S. Sundar
Coonoor , May 3 The highest volume for the year so far has been catalogued for the auctions of the Coonoor Tea Trade Association (CTTA) this week. This will be the 18th sale this year. The volume of 10.87 lakh kg is as much as 2.06 lakh kg more than the offer of last week. The previous high this year was 10.42 lakh kg offered on January 12. The only other sale when the volume exceeded the 10-lakh mark was on March 17, at 10.07 lakh kg. Of the 10.87 lakh kg catalogued for this week, as much as 7.52 lakh kg belong to the leaf grades and the remaining 3.35 lakh kg belong to the dust grades. Again, as much as 10.12 lakh kg belong to the CTC variety and the remaining 0.75 lakh kg belong to the orthodox variety.
Steady rise
The volume has been posting increases week after week in the past six weeks. This is in keeping with the rise in the production, which is heading for a rush period in May and June. This is an annual feature; last year, in the corresponding sale, the volume offered was 14.04 lakh kg - as much as four lakh kg more than the current offer. Then, the volume of leaf grades alone totalled 10.33 lakh kg - close the combined volume of leaf and dust grades now. The recent rains have been instrumental in the crop picking up.
