First box train leaves Gateway Distripark's ICD

Our Bureau

New Delhi , May 3

The first container train was flagged off from Gateway Distripark Ltd's (GDL) inland container depot (ICD) in Garhi Harsaru, Gurgaon to Mundra port in Gujarat.

While the rake is owned by Container Corporation of India (Concor), the containers were booked by GDL. This ICD would shorten the rail link distance between northern hinterland and Gujarat ports to about 1,100 km from the present 1,225 km between Tughlakabad depot and Gujarat ports. Earlier, ICD containers were transported to Tughlakabad station by road and then moved through rail link. Further development would depend on customer demand.

Future plans

GDL, which has also applied for container operations licence, plans to set up container freight stations at six to seven major ports in the country, apart from setting up inland container depots at Punjab, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh and in South India, said Mr Gopinath Pillai, Chairman, GDL.
