The Union Finance Minister, Mr P. Chidambaram, has stressed the need for evolving a political consensus to deal with the question of petrol and diesel price revision in the country.

However, he conceded that a decision on increasing the price could not be deferred for long in the wake of spiralling oil prices in the international market.

Speaking to newspersons in Coimbatore on Tuesday , he said when the price of crude hovered around $25-$30 a barrel, it remained purely an `economic issue' and an economic solution could be sought. But when the crude oil price zoomed to $65-$70per barrel, the price revision ceased to be an economic issue and it became a `complex political issue'.
