Mindscreen, the film production company of cinematographer Rajiv Menon, has launched the Mindscreen Film Institute, which will offer specialised courses on various aspects of film making.

Mr Menon told the press that the first course will be on cinematography for a duration of six months.

Eventually, the institute will also offer courses in screen writing and assistant directorship.

He said the cinematography course would be a combination of technical theory sessions as well as practical workshops, with exposure to live projects. The students will also have access to the facilities and equipment at Mindscreen, which include movie cameras, digital and still cameras, lenses, lights, gensets and grip items.

The course will emphasise on the techniques and aesthetics of cinematography, said Mr Menon.

The institute will consist of four full-time faculty members as well as part-time and visiting teachers — all professionals from the industry.

Director Mani Ratnam, who was present at the conference, said with constant technology upgradation in the world of cinema, an institute such as this, affiliated to a production company, would provide the necessary equipment to keep up with changes.

Mr Menon said the institute would take in 10 students for the first edition of the six-month course at a course fee of Rs 1 lakh, excluding the caution deposit for the equipment.

The requirement for applying students is graduation in any discipline from a recognised university or a school or diploma-certificate level education with three years of experience in film, video or multi-media. Those working in the industry as assistant cameraman may also apply.
