Telecommunications Global majors eyeing BSNL's cellular project Our Bureau
Unlike last time the entire contract will go to two lowest bidders
New Delhi , May 3
Eighteen global telecom and IT equipment majors have evinced interest in bidding for the multi-billion dollar mobile infrastructure project of the state-owned Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd (BSNL). The project, which envisages laying 60 million cellular lines across the country, is estimated to cost $5 billion. The companies, which have bought the tender document include Cisco, Hewlett Packard, Nokia, Huawei, Ericsson, Motorola, ZTE, Sun Microsystems, Siemens and Alcatel.
Bid opening postponed
Meanwhile, BSNL today postponed the date for opening the financial bids to May 31. This comes after equipment vendors sought more time to submit their bids. The vendors said since there was only six working days left they needed more time to study the details of the offer. This is the second time that BSNL is postponing the bid opening date. Initially it was slated to open on April 28. BSNL has also pushed back the day to answer the queries raised by the vendors from May 3 to May 10. BSNL, on April 28, had held discussions with all the 18 telecom and IT companies on the tender conditions. The bids will be opened for 45.5 million lines while the remaining has already been awarded to the joint venture between Indian Telephone Industries and French major Alcatel under the quota system.
