Reservation blues

The issue of reservations in educational institutions and the private sector has so caught everybody's imagination that some reporters have started seeing ghosts where none exist. A news agency report on a CII conference this week had the invitee Minister saying that reservations would not be rammed down the corporate throat as the private sector was already doing much through corporate social responsibility initiatives.

The report was a surprise as much had been made of the Science and Technology Minister, Mr Kapil Sibal, publicly differing with the views of the Human Resource Development Minister, Mr Arjun Singh, with the latter even holding a press conference to remind colleagues that there was something called Cabinet decorum. And, after that a junior Minister hinting at no reservations in the private sector!

Some discreet enquiries later, it turned out that the Minister was referring to reservations for disabled people and hence his reference to corporate social responsibility. An astute politician, this junior Minister was no way getting into the bad books of someone like Mr Arjun Singh.
